The last few weeks there have been tons of these butterflies on the grass in our front and back yards – much to the delight of my toddler! They look rather dull when they first alight on the grass, but when they fan their wings it shows off a lovely grey blue colour on the top. A bit of searching identified them as the Common Grass Blue Butterfly (Zizina labradus). Some seem to be mating as they often spiral upwards in pairs in a little aerial display. It’s very pretty, but I am hoping for the garden’s sake that it won’t mean two billion caterpillars munching on the greenery in the near future.
